Bingo at Celebration City

St. John's Day was at Celebration City Saturday, September 30th, and for the four of us, would be one long, yet great day. We arrived and checked in, grabbed our "Picnic Staff" shirts and headed for the building that would be our home for the next ten hours. At first the task seemed daunting. We'd been assigned to announch bingo for the next ten hours. "We'll do it in shifts and make it through" we told each other. And for a while that worked fine. Just when we thought we were burned out calling bingo, something exciting would happen, usually involving the people playing bingo, and we'd get a second wind, and third, and fourth...

The Bingo games were being played in the movie theatre that usually houses Veggie Tales showings. Today, it was our home. As the day went by, and we all became more and more comfortable on the mic calling numbers in front of people, more and more Bingo players showed up with each game. Two of us would work the actual game, one calling and one grabbing numbers, while the other two worked the doors. Simple enough. That system worked from the start, and we never changed it.

Luckily, we were given a book of Bingo transparancies that featured different games we could play, like the above, which was entitled "Railroad Tracks". Just fill in the grey areas, we'd tell those walking in. But no matter how many times we said that, there was one person every couple games that would yell "Bingo!", and once we'd announce false alarm over the mic, the audience would erupt in applause and delight knowing the game was going to continue. From 10am, until 6-7pm, people came in a consistent stream that never ceased until the very last game of the night. It was a few people here and there, but by the evening, the entire theatre was full to the point that people walking in had trouble finding four seats in a row for their family.

Before we knew it, we were calling Bingo to an entire movie theatre full of people. The most exciting part of it was the fact that the people playing were as animated and excited as could be. I remember at times asking if anyone was close and the place erupting in "I've got one more! Call B 7!" This, of course, led to each following number becoming the most crucial number of their lives, and the moans and cheers following each number had the four of us having just as much fun as the people playing.

The excitement would come in waves though. Our shifts went from three games each, to a couple hours each. Some games dragged on, with no emotion from the crowd, while others found the crowd cheering and moaning and we didn't want them to end. Toward the seventh or eighth hour of the shift, we started zoning out, much like this picture, which couldn't represent how we felt at times better:

Blurry vision, blank stares, sometimes you couldn't help it. I think we went through 11 bottles of water and who knows how much food, but in the end we made it through and didn't regret a second of it. Once we were down to five prizes, people really started getting into it.

I took this picture right before we reached the five prizes left mark. I took over the mic then and couldn't believe how many people were there now. Normally one may be nervous talking in front of so many people, but by this time we actually knew most of the faces in the theatre quite well, as some of them had been there almost seven hours, and felt right at home up front. The very last game consisted of us playing Blackout, which is filling up your entire card, and after a few minutes people started grumbling. I asked if anyone was close and the theatre erupted once again. The final game was for the final two prizes, and I'd call each letter and wait a few seconds, then call the number. By then everyone was waiting for their number to be called, so they didn't find my teasing as funny as I did. But I was just as nervous to see who would win as they were, and when someone finally called out "Bingo!", the people groaned and boo'd, but much to their dismay, we checked it and announced the final "It's a Bingo!" and everyone sighed loudly.

If you want to get to know three other people very well that you didn't quite know that well before, I recommend calling a ten hour Bingo marathon with them. I can't think of anything better. But the Bingo marathon was a blast despite the long day, and I would do it again next year without hesitation. Another EMA success, and one I won't soon forget.
